H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete is a highly respected African statesman, global health advocate, and champion of inclusive development and peacebuilding. As the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania (2005–2015), he is internationally recognized for his dedication to regional integration, sustainable development, and youth empowerment across Africa.
Since leaving office, President Kikwete has continued to shape global policy through his work with international organizations. He currently serves as the Board Chair of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), where he leads efforts to mobilize political and financial support to ensure quality education for children in the world’s most vulnerable regions. Under his stewardship, GPE has advanced inclusive education systems, especially for girls and children affected by conflict and displacement.
A lifelong public servant, President Kikwete’s political journey spans over four decades. Before assuming the presidency, he held several high-level ministerial roles, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (1995–2005), where he played a critical role in shaping Tanzania’s foreign policy and mediating peace processes in the Great Lakes region. His tenure is marked by active engagement in resolving regional conflicts, notably in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and promoting diplomatic dialogue throughout the African continent.
As President, Mr. Kikwete prioritized economic growth through investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and education, while strengthening democratic institutions. His administration was also instrumental in launching the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT), a public-private initiative to boost agricultural productivity and food security.
A steadfast advocate for health equity, President Kikwete has served as a prominent voice in global health initiatives. He was a Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on Malaria Eradication and continues to support efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other public health challenges in Africa. His leadership in the fight against malaria, in particular, has been recognized by numerous international health bodies.
Beyond his political and diplomatic contributions, President Kikwete is deeply invested in youth and leadership development. He is the founder of the Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Foundation (JMKF), which works to improve access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for young people and marginalized communities across Tanzania and the African continent.
President Kikwete’s legacy reflects a lifelong commitment to building a prosperous, peaceful, and resilient Africa—anchored in visionary leadership, inclusive development, and global cooperation.
